Meredith was born and raised in Fort Scott by long-time residents Steve and Vickie Sewell. The Sewells' presence in Fort Scott started long ago in the ownership and operation of the Fort Scott Greenhouse, a local business that has operated for almost 85 years. Her family has been involved in the community of Fort Scott for many decades, serving on community boards and in business.
Meredith is the oldest of 4 children, now living and working all over the United States. In 2013, she married another Fort Scott legacy, Brad Tucker, son of Raymond and Diane Tucker. Brad is a business owner as well, and they live just outside of town in a century-old farmhouse surrounded by horses, dogs and flourishing gardens.
Meredith began her career in physical therapy during her graduate studies with the physical therapy center JayDoc, a volunteer-run center in Kansas City that provides care for the uninsured and low-income individuals of the city. For her contributions to the program development at JayDoc, Meredith received the Chairman's Outstanding Student Award at graduation.
Following graduation, she worked at Beyond Therapy and learned some of the most innovative treatment strategies of the time. This included intensive therapy sessions of 3 hours/day, 5 days/week for 3 weeks, the use of the Therasuit Bungee system (built to provide appropriate feedback for neuromuscular injuries and developmental disorders) and working with their hyperbaric chamber.
After 2.5 years at Beyond Therapy, Fort Scott called Meredith home. She returned to work at Mercy Hospital for the next 9.5 years.
Here, Meredith was in charge of inpatient therapy services, assisted the director with the inpatient rehabilitation department, developed Mercy's first pediatric program and started to contract physical therapy services with the Fort Scott School District.
Meredith's pediatric program grew from one patient referred by a doctor in Kansas City to a program where she was seeing 8-10 children per day, all while balancing her duties in the inpatient services department of the hospital.
Meredith values the years she spent at Beyond Therapy and Mercy and learned so much from the outstanding nurses, doctors and therapists with whom she worked.
